| UK-funded Studentships |
Currently, available studentships
are advertised on our postgraduate studies page.
UK Research Councils: The Institute is awarded studentships regularly from national research councils - particularly the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council). Until recently, such studentships were allocated on a quota basis to university departments, but the system is currently being changed to one where a training account is maintained. This should give departments more flexibility in how they award studentships. Under this scheme, the University will provide the standard package of renumeration (fees and living expenses) for UK residents only (Note that the rules are different for Project related EPSRC studentships. Eligibility for those is not dependent on nationality). The University requires that the minimum stipend be GBP 9,000 per annum. Residents of other EU countries are eligible for fees only. For further information on these studentships, consult the EPSRC web page. In 2004, the Institute obtained recognition from the ESRC (Economic and Social Sciences Research Council). As of October 2004 the institute will be able to compete for ESRC grants specifically for research students. Under this scheme, the University will provide the standard package of renumeration (fees and living expenses) for UK residents only. The University requires that the minimum stipend be GBP 9,000 per annum. Residents of other EU countries are eligible for fees only. For further information on these studentships, consult the ESRC web page. If you are interested in putting in a bid for a grant to the ESRC with ITRI for your PhD research, contact the ITRI Research Student Division Leader. Other possible funding routes for UK students include the AHRB (Arts and Humanities Research Board), which runs a competition for funding and may be possible for strongly theoretical linguistic work.
University bursaries From time to time, studentships become
available through funding from the university, but such occassions
occur only very infrequently. When they do, funding is provided at
the EPSRC rate.

| Other Studentships |
Postgraduate students at the University of Brighton often bring
their own funding through grants. This is particularly true of
international students, who (especially if they are from outside the
EU), come on a grant from their government. Other times, students have grants from their employers (companies or universities) or, for instance, the British Council. See, in particular, their Chevening Scholarships.

| Self-funding |
The University also accepts self-financing research students. For further information consult the main University postgraduate study page on funding. There is also a programme called the ORS awards scheme, which covers the additional tuition fees for international (i.e. non-EU) students. These may be awarded to research students judged to be of "outstanding merit and research potential". Details of how to apply for one of these awards will be given to any appropriate candidates applying to the Institute. |
